thanksgiving 2010

Not gonna lie- I was kinda dreading today. Been a little teary all week leading up to it. Quiet moments, we miss sweet Heidi, and this is the first holiday without her so I assumed the silence would be amplified.
But, this day came and we are home again-Henry in bed- and I reflect and think, what a great, peaceful day.

Some of my favorite Thanksgiving Day highlights - Top 10:
10: Catching some of the Thanksgiving Parade on tv and seeing Henry's eyes light up at the big balloons.
9: Going to Pete's grandparent's place for a wonderful meal. You get to circle what you want on the little menus. love it. Henry's favorite - the cranberries.

8: Pete's grandma telling me that you have to give up things like bread at her age. In her words, "You've got to give up some things, to keep what you got."
7: Isaiah, Henry and Seth, running laps around the table, working off their meal, while us adults let it go straight to our thighs.
6: Henry sharing his polar bear, cow, and mary Little People with Josephine. He really loves his little cousin.

5: Feeling like you belong when Pete's grandpa introduced us to a lady and said, "and over there is two Jolenes and a Pete."
4: Coming back to a warm place so my boys could nap and I could catch a little hgtv on hulu.
3: Henry lighting up when we say we are going to Grandma and Papa Johns house. "We get to see them again, Henry!" I love that he knows them. He really knows them.
2: Henry giving Josephine 100 hugs and trying to sit in her lap.
1: Being together, sharing what we are thankful for and even though it is hard, having hope in the Lord that we still can have great holidays.

17 months!

Seventeen months! Crazy. We'll actually he's prob. about 17 1/2 months. Just wanted to record a few things, cause here one day, gone the next and it's the little things I want to remember!

Things h is up to:
signs fish, star, frog, dog, please, thank you, blows kisses, all done and that's all i can think of right now.
says mama, dada, papa, buddy, cup, up, bear, ball, and lots of words that he is convinced have meaning.
loves animals, puzzles, running, music, shape sorters, pointing, and blueberries.
just started liking slides, doing a cheesy smile, not being afraid of airplanes and the dishwasher, pulling Buddy's tail, kissing pictures of kids and animals in books.

nutshells are fallish?

Well, I do this sometimes, get backlogged on events, pictures and memories! But, I figure I could pretend I planned it since it is fall, and I am trying to put our fall in a nutshell. Nutshells seem fallish to me - So, yes, pretend I planned it.
In early October, we went to the apple orchard for my motherinlaw's birthday!

Then, the following weekend, Papa Johnson posed for a great pumpkin picture with grandkids!

The next weekend, we erickson 3 had a low key weekend that involved a lot of outsideness and playing!

This past weekend, it was my birthday. Pete even got me a cookie cake. :)

Then, we headed to my brother's house for a little Halloween/bday celebration. So much fun to be back by family.

comfort level

So, after moving back up after living in TX for 6 years, we are slowing settling in. One example is setting up Henry's crib two nights ago. As the pieces started coming together, you could see Henry's eyes lighting up and he kept hugging our legs in anticipation. The last two and a half months or so, he has been residing in a pack and play with no complaints. He is a tall guy, so he always sorta looked like he was making due sleeping in an "L" shape.

Well, here is some evidence of the reunion. I am not sure if you can see, I tried taking a picture of him sleeping last night through the video monitor. But if you look close (head to the left/feet to the right/arms over his head), he is in spread eagle position, sleeping like a rock. :)

for the love

Henry "made" this page last Sunday. Of course, I wonder how much he really remembers about it or if his teacher just slapped the stickers on for him with his name as a parental keepsake. But just this morning, Henry pointed to it. I got it down (yep, I totally am going to hang everything of his I can on the fridge). He pointed to the animals a couple of times and then he did the sweetest thing. He gave each, the elephant and giraffe, two kisses. God loves the animals and so does Henry.

16 months

16 months, Henry is! Time sure does fly with this little guy. I remember last summer my mom saying, "This time next year, he'll be all over the place" And of course, I thought, yeah right, how could that be? But now I know. When we picked Henry up from the nursery on Sunday, the nice lady said, "He's very happy. And very busy." :)

Henry is in such a fun stage right now, that I wanted to make sure I wrote a couple things so I don't forget! He's really into two things right now: animals and lining things up.

Another thing he does these days is kinda latch onto one or two objects and they travel with us throughout the day. For example, cat and dog puzzle piece are swinging with he and our friend, The Calvins' daughter.

We were reminded by our friends, The Fanchi's, this week what a perfect gift each moment of life is. They got to meet and hold their sweet baby boy for fifteen minutes this week until he went to be with the Lord. I am just astounded by their strength and willingness to be so real about it all. For me, it has made me cherish Henry so much-even the teething days.

Other 16 month milestones for Henry:
says Buddy (our cat's name)
signs fish
doesn't really walk much, he runs

for the 100th time

I think when our parents would tell us "for the hundredth time..." there was more to that then I give credit for. You know how you've heard something that many times, but one day, it kinda just sinks in and it is like a brand new revelation? Well, I have had one of those moments lately.
I think kids have to try some foods like 15 times before they bite and they say students sometimes have to hear something like 10 times before they learn it, and Jolenes have to hear something 100 times before it feels like new information.
What I heard was from my mother in law, Linda, who is quite a good one. The other day she spoke such a truth that really helped me have some timely perspective and comfort. I am sure you know all that has gone in our family, even such she maintains the strength enough to share these words;"God didn't promise us an easy life, but that he did say that he would be with us through it all." Hope this is your hundredth time to hear it to-maybe it'll mean something.

perfect morning

This morning was a perfect day in MN. We had a fun morning being out and about!
We started off at our favorite duo-Brueggers Bagels and Caribou Coffee:

Did some swinging, walking, and playing at Lake Nokomis:

Grabbed some groceries at Trader Joe's, came home to eat some leftovers for lunch and now we are all going to nap. Although a play by play might seem silly, this is truly a day I want to remember. :)

thinking about heidi

Been thinking a lot about my sister in law, heidi, in the last few days. Really missing her. We buried her on Saturday and it resurfaced all the emotions that are there. It was a beautiful day, so glad for that. Now that we are back in MN, it is slowly really hitting us that she is not here. We miss her so much.
A couple verses that have helped me this week from the message version of the Bible:
"You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule. You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you." -Matthew 5:3,4
As I am thinking of the loss we have experienced I am trying to keep updated by the minute on our dear friends in TX who are experiencing life--- as I type. I am so overjoyed to have just heard that the Steiners have had their two little boys. If anyone knows loss, it is them, and now they are welcoming two little ones tonight! Please pray for their boys that are doing well in the NICU right now.

almost 15 months

I cannot believe that Henry is almost 15 months. I forget that he is not a baby anymore and fits more in the category for toddler. When my sister in law told me that a water park that we were thinking of going to was free for "under 1" I got excited, and then minutes later remembered that was already 3 months ago!!!

Anyways, here's what the H has been up to lately:
*loves to walk, run and be on the move
*really chatters with his hand as if making a very important point
*signs, please (which also triples as "yes" and "right now!"), bye, dog, and thank you
*is in a stage where he'll say something and we'll say, did he say ketchup?! when really his vocabulary includes mom (as a swear word, mamamamamam), dada, yeah, and papa.
*really concentrates on projects-like putting dominoes in a box or bucket.
*loves marching around and clapping to music. his favorite songs of the moment that he has me play over and over are "little bunny foo foo" and "praise him, praise him, all you little children." i have deduced that he likes the staccato type music from the picks of those two.
*blows kisses (even to the poster of a cat at the family dollar)
*a friend asked me if he had a blanket or stuffed animal that he is attached to, and i laughed to think that henry's love is a little plastic "little people" sheep. day or night that thing is with him.
*oh my goodness, and how could i forget. henry is obsessed with lights. he says an "uh" which i believe means "on" and points to lamps and lights for the viewing pleasure of seeing them turn on and off.

Henry is a joy. Each day I think he cannot get anymore fun. I am blessed to be a mom and a mom of this boy. :)
